Houze of Homies

From house dances to hip-hop artists, Houze of Homies.

Originally from Soshanguve, block VV, K. Savage and Smartz Da Artist better known as HOUZE OF HOMIES met each other a few years ago in 2009 in the beginning of high school.

K. Savage was the new kid in the ‘hood’ and Smartz was already familiar with the place. They lived in the same street.

Savage exclaimed that: “Whenever he used to go to the shop, he would always bump into to Smarts and his friends and watched them play soccer in the street. Suddenly one day he and Smarts had a mini conflict.” He then added on to say “because you know when someone is in the same lane as you, you kind of feel jealous. So we had a mini conflict but some way somehow that conflict turned into friendship”.

Smarts exclaimed that their friendship grew and became so strong that they decided to perform music together. He said that they have been in the music industry for three years now as they hosted their first professional successful Hip-hop music event called’ Paradise Shut Down’ in the year 2014. They hosted the same event again last year as it is an annual thing.

At first they just threw gigs and parties for their own fun and for their family and friends and they didn’t benefit much from it. They didn’t expect that their first professional event would turn out to be such a great success. With the huge amount of success achieved with the first event, they decided to take their talent seriously by making a living out of it.

They grew up on stage and in school, they use to dance a lot to house music and up to this day, they are still in love with house music just as they were the very first time they heard it. However, they also love hip-hop music and that’s where their interest lies as it is something that has been in them from an early age. Hip-hop music has always been their passion.

They came up with their group name HOUZE OF HOMIES with a Z which was derived from the link between the two words house and homie which means family friend. K. Savage explained; “a friend is just a friend, but when you address someone as your homie, it’s like they are your family. There is some sense of belonging that one feels. So build a house and let all your homies live there and if you join HOUZE OF HOMIES then you are part of the family.”

“We enjoy everything we do because we do what we love. From choosing beats to hosting events, although hosting events can sometimes be challenging, but if it turns out to be a success, you’re the happiest man alive”, said Smartz.

Everything for them is fun because they are following their passion. When it comes to the music side, performing music for them helps them both grow as individuals as they only use to dance at talents shows before. Now that they don’t dance anymore, they say they still got the moves.

Apart from music, K. Savage is a Multi Media Designer and he focuses on photography and digital design as well as on computers. Smarts Da Artist is an artist and he does paintings and drawings and is still experimenting on other mediums to use. He recently started doing tattoos as he loves tattoos.

Smarts said that the three artists he would love to perform with one day are: Nasty C, Siya and Eminem. K. Savage said he would like to perform with Nasty C, Kendrick Lamarck and Eminem as well but there are a whole lot of other celebrities they wouldn’t mind sharing the same stage with.

When asked where they see themselves in five years from now, they smiled and said that they hope to have achieved a lot of things and by then and they should have all the equipment they need. The things they started now, should be operating and the HOUZE OF HOMIES should be built and standing by then.

Advice K. Savage had for youngsters out there was that if you start something now, never ever let it go. Smarts said that he is the spirit type of guy. He goes with his heart so he doesn’t mind going out there and getting rejected. So what he would tell youngsters is to go get rejected. Don’t be afraid of rejection.
